Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: Sponsored by Harris Bank and hosted by The Volunteer Center and The Interfaith Housing Center, this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day was a record breaking success. Over 300 families, teens, friends old and new, people who had the day off from work and service groups donated their time to make 350 blankets, 50 scarves and dozens of pull toys for the homeless, hospitalized children and animal shelters respectively. The service project was organized by the two local agencies and preceded the inspirational professional performance by the Writers’ Theatre entitled, THE MLK PROJECT: The Fight for Civil Rights. Audience members contributed to a thoughtful conversation led by Writers’ Theatre, weaving in the historic inauguration that was to occur the following day. In addition to Martin Luther King Day of Service, The Volunteer Center also organizes Make A Difference Day in the fall, several holiday service opportunities, TV tuneout activities and National Youth Service. Each of these days enables people to easily participate in impactful service projects. For those who are looking for repeat commitments and build relationships with non-profits as long term volunteers, our website, www.VolunteerCenterNTT.org offers a large menu of over 160 social service agencies, searchable by service category, keyword or zip code. Listings for recently posted “hot opportunities”, soup kitchens and agency news are also available. Be sure to visit our website or contact via email, VolunteerNTT@aol.com if you are interested in helping others. |

The latest buzz word in the country today is “service”. Service to one’s country, service to those who need support, and the service some of us might need to utilize for ourselves. People are looking for ways to pull together and help each other. In its 49 years, The Volunteer Center has responded to the changing times and answered the call as society beckoned. Since our early days in the 1960’s, residents in the township eagerly stepped up to help their neighbors, whether it was by delivering meals to the sick and homeless, tutoring, or assisting the elderly or youth and infants. Today, the Volunteer Center is a member of state and national organizations, and is respected in the community as a valuable volunteer resource. Thanks to our new interactive website www.VolunteerCenterNTT.org, our staff and broadcast emails, we help residents identify volunteer opportunities by referring them to over 160 non-profits in our database, or connect groups to meaningful service projects and service learning training. Since this fall, The Volunteer Center has successfully sponsored Make A Difference Day, Thanksgiving Greet and Feed, Operation Comfort and Joy, and our very popular Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Inspiration, co-sponsored with the Interfaith Housing Center. This March 18 we will host a VolunteerAbility Forum (info this page) that will address the need for people with disabilities to contribute as volunteers. In late spring we will once again host our Annual Recognition Event and Volunteer Fair. We are able to offer our “services” to the community because of your help. If you have not had the opportunity to contribute yet to the Volunteer Center, we hope you will join our generous friends below and help us continue to grow and serve. Thank you! |
