Service Learning Workshop

On September 19, The Volunteer Center of New Trier Township (VCNTT) held a workshop to provide valuable service learning resources for schools, faith based and civic groups in the New Trier Township. Some agency representatives were also there to work with volunteer groups and provide service project options. The workshop covered such topics as the difference between service “learning” and service “projects” -- two very different approaches to service. In the service “learning” approach, students are engaged in the entire process, from identification of the need, to the project design and execution, and finally a reflection of the impact made. Service projects are valuable too, in that they accomplish the goals of the agency. In the project model, the service project has already been set up and the students complete it at a predetermined place and time. The “project” works best with very young students (K-2), while students in older grades, and particularly middle and high schools, are fully capable and benefit greatly from the organization and manpower required to identify and set up the entire project. The experience becomes transformative. Barb Tubekis, VCNTT Director discussed Service Learning techniques and distributed resource material.

During the workshop, guest presenters also talked about their service programs and special projects they’ve completed. Linda Ball, past President of the VCNTT and former Outreach Chair for Hubbard Woods School spoke about their Comfort Kit project that the students created for the Red Cross, with help from service students at Skokie School and the Volunteer Center. Deb Perelman, from the Glencoe Junior High Project, discussed the wide array of successful service programming they help their middle school students execute. Drea Gallaga, English teacher and Service Learning Coordinator for North Shore Country Day School also shared the very interactive process the upper school students have achieved through the guidance of Gallaga. Mary Quirke, VCNTT board member, discussed the Highcrest school effort the last three years for Make A Difference Day where the students fill the school gym with donations for delivery to the train station on Make A Difference Day.

Over the years, The Volunteer Center has worked with township schools to help them plan service programs from which the students and the agencies both benefit. Each school has its own needs and climate, which the Volunteer Center respects as it works with each school to design a unique service learning program. The VCNTT currently has over 150 agencies in its database – many of which are eager to work with our future leaders. If your school or faith based group has an Outreach program (or you would like to start one) and you’d like some assistance, please contact Barb Tubekis at The Volunteer Center, email: VolunteerNTT@aol.com or phone 847-441-7665.
