Category of Service: Homeless, Low Income, and Housing

Homeless: This group includes not only the stereotypical “homeless” vagrant, but people who are displaced from their homes through economic or physical hardship, or out of risk of personal abuse, such as women and children who flee  to shelters.  The homeless situation is generally economic in origin, but at times disaster plays a role as well, such as when fire or flooding occurs.  The work here involves the direct care for the homeless person or persons in a shelter, such as serving in a soup kitchen, donating clothes and furniture through collection drives, or becoming a counselor to help people back on their feet.  In any given month  there are approximately 30 families who live in New Trier Township who are down on their luck and must receive free food through the township food pantry in Winnetka .  Not all  homeless situations are in the inner city or Evanston , although there are over a dozen soup kitchens in Evanston.

Low Income: This group includes any person or family which needs essential services or supplies for which they cannot afford to pay (or pay full price).

Housing: This group includes people who are in need of affordable housing due to low or fixed income situations.

Many of these agencies have a more detailed description in our 2005 Social Service Directory.
