Sundays 1:30 - 3:30 pm Cooking Shift (prepare and repackage unused dining hall food into individual meals as well as large congregate meal dishes. This shifts take place at an industrial kitchen in one of the main dining halls at Northwestern University)

Sundays 3:30 - 5:30 pm Bag Lunch Shift (during the summer, we participate in a program called Feeding Our Future, which address youth hunger during the summer when the National School Lunch program is not in operation by providing 22,000 lunches over the summer -- the shift entails making and wrapping sandwiches and packing bag lunches)

Sundays 3:30 - 5:30 pm Delivery Shift (we take the meals prepared at the cooking shift to our clients around Evanston. This requires meeting at the kitchen to pick up the meals and then leaving in groups of 2-4 people in cars and vans to drop of the meals around Evanston. It is not required that you have a car to participate in this shift but we are always looking for drivers who can donate their time and car space to help. These shifts can last from 1-2 hours)

- 6/9/08 - Each year The Evanston School Children's Clothing Association (ESCCA) provides clothing to around 600 needy children in Evanston District 65 (K-8th grade). Volunteers are needed at their clothing center in Evanston to help sort donated clothing on Wednesday mornings, and to assist children choosing their "new" wardrobes of clothing on scheduled evenings (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 7-9 pm) during the school year. - 5/19/08 - (Relisted - listed last month, but they need more host families.) The Center for Cultural Interchange needs families to Host a Foreign Exchange Student for one month this summer. Spanish Program dates: June 26 - July 24; French Program dates: July 9 - July 30. All students are high school aged and attend ESL classes and activities during the Monday - Friday week. - 4/21/08 SHORE Community Services' Second Time Around Thrift and Gift Shop needs your help by volunteering time at the shop. The shop, which is run solely by volunteers, is located at 4123 Oakton Street in Skokie. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Volunteers can work as store clerks on these days either from 9:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. or the entire day. Help is also needed to restock and clean the shop on Mondays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Any time you have available will be most welcomed. - 4/21/08 - The American Cancer Society is currently recruiting community groups, churches, civic groups, and local families and residents to participate in New Trier Township's Relay For Life. This event raises over $200,000 for the American Cancer Society. It takes place on June 13th at New Trier High School's Northfield Campus, and runs from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on June 14th. Teams can be made up of anywhere from one to fifteen people. We ask that each team member raise at least $100.00 to participate. There will be live entertainment, food, games, activities, and most importantly hundreds of people coming together to fight cancer and work toward finding a cure! - 4/17/08 - The Winnetka Youth Organization (WYO) is currently seeking community members to serve on their Board of Directors. The WYO Board has a new President and Treasurer, and they hope in the coming year to take the organization in a dynamic new direction. Board Members should be familiar with the needs of teens, and dedicated to providing a safe place in the community for them. The Board of Directors meets monthly at the Winnetka Community House, and they ask that Board Members make a two-year commitment. - 4/17/08 - LifeSource Blood Center has two opportunity areas:

- Brighten Lives Of Area Patients By Caring For Donors At Blood Drives.
Help brighten lives for area patients by providing a positive, rewarding experience for donors at community blood drives that are held at area businesses and community groups. Responsibilities include: welcoming donors to the blood drive and managing the refreshment area as well as other duties. Blood Drives Are held throughout the area at various locations.

- Department of Defense Mobile Blood Drive Volunteer.
Help brighten lives and support the men and women who so courageously serve us and our country at Department of Defense blood drives. These young people are donating blood to meet the needs of Chicagoland patients while in training at Great Lakes Naval Base. Responsibilities include: customer service, welcoming donors to the blood drive and managing the refreshment area as well as other duties.

For both positions, volunteers must be 18 years & older. The ideal volunteer should be friendly, customer service focused, professional, energetic, and flexible. Minimum age requirement is 18. Reliable transportation is required.

- 4/14/08 - Glencoe Youth Services is starting a new socialization program for young adults in New Trier Township with developmental disabilities. They need:
1) Graphic Designer - For a logo.
2) Guest Speakers - For discussions/presentations on relevant topics such as finances, health, cooking, jobs, and hobbies. Usually 1 lecture per topic.
3) Staff - Socialize, offer support, and participate in activities. Tuesday evenings.

- 2/25/08– The Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago has openings for Long Term Care Ombudsmen, who advocate with or on behalf of elders in nursing homes to ensure they are treated with respect, receive quality care, and are free to exercise self-determination. Ten hours of training are provided. The obligation is one one-hour visit per week, with a commitment of two years. The service area is suburban Cook County and all of Lake County (Illinois). - House of Welcome Receptionist: Greet participants and guests of the Senior Center's day program for people with memory loss. Answer telephones and assist the staff with clerical duties. Afternoon positions available.
- Mim's Gift Shop Volunteer: If you enjoy people and shopping, this opportunity is for you! Sell merchandise while meeting Senior Center members and guests. Tuesday afternoon position available.
- Lifelong Learning Office Assistant: Help individuals register for classes and become Senior Center members. Ideal for someone with administrative and computer skills who enjoys social interaction. Thursday and Friday positions available.
- FFS (Flexible Senior Services) and ATP (Assistive Technology Program) Volunteer for Evanston office: Help eligible seniors apply for and receive a variety of goods and services, from groceries and equipment for the home to assistance with monthly expenses. Training provided.
- SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program) Volunteer for Evanston office: Help clients with health insurance questions and Medicare supplement decisions. Training provided.
Flexible Commitment:
- SeniorNet Education Coordinator: Oversee selection and scheduling of the Senior Center's computer class offerings. Ideal for someone with strong organizational skills and familiarity with computer learning.
- Friendly Visitor: Visit a homebound senior and bring great joy to his/her life! Provide companionship by sharing stories, playing games, etc. Together, you determine your visiting schedule.
- Escorted Transportation Service Coordinator: Work from your home to match seniors' requests for rides to medical and dental appointments with the volunteer drivers. The coordinator works a two-week shift every two months. Computer familiarity required.
- Escorted Transportation Service Driver: Drive seniors in your own car to/from medical and dental appointments. Volunteer as your schedule allows!

- 1/17/08The National Runaway Switchboard (Chicago – north side) is the federally designated national communication system for runaway and homeless youth.  The need volunteers to answer their 24-hour toll-free Crisis Hotline.  Orientation and 40 hours of training are provided.  Hours are flexible.  High school students age 16+ are welcome to serve.  They also need volunteers to distribute promotional materials in their communities to raise awareness of the Hotline and other services of NRS.  Contact the Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@1800runaway.org or call 773-289-1726. - 12/3/07 - A Safe Place, which provides assistance to victims of domestic violence, has many volunteer needs: It is located in Zion, Illinois.

Crisis line volunteers - the crisis line is staffed 24 hors a day, 365 days a year. 20 volunteers are needed. Full training will be provided.

Clerical assistants - filing, direct mail preparation, data entry, and special projects. Hours are flexible

Display room assistant - The display room is stocked with gently used household items donated for their clients' use. Volunteers will organize donated items in the storage room and restock and merchandise items attractively in the display room.

- 11/12/07 - A group of knitters at the Northshore Senior Center in Northfield needs contributions of 4-ply acrylic yarn (not sport yarn, not wool) to make into hats, scarves, and mittens for homeless shelters and baby blankets for the Linus Project. - 10/25/07 - The Interfaith Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs, an advocate for fair and affordable housing, is seeking volunteer fair housing testers. The need is immediate and for adults of all racial and ethnic backgrounds and physical abilities. Volunteers are paid a stipend -- $65 for a sales test and $35 for a rental test, plus travel and postage. To be a "tester" means you pose as a homeseeker. You pretend to be looking for a house or apartment and complete a report to Interfaith about your treatment. Your efforts help Interfaith determine if discrimination is occurring in the sale or rental of housing on the North Shore. Funding from HUD supports this work. As long as you are an adult and not a lawyer or a real estate professional, you are invited o apply. A 2-hour training seesion is provided. - 8/3/07 - The North Shore Chamber Orchestra has been in our community for 26 years and is looking to engage volunteers in a variety of ongoing needs. This Evanston based chamber orchestra, connected with Northwestern University School of Music, needs an accountant or bookkeeper who could spend a few hours a month to some basic bookkeeping. - 12/18/06 - Secure The Call Foundation is a national coalition of law enforcement agencies and non-profits which collects used cell phones, refurbishes them, and reprograms them as 911 emergency phones. They are then distributed to domestic violence shelters, senior centers, neighborhood watch groups, school crossing guards, and other agencies which support those with an emergency 911 need. The distribution is nationwide, and the demand is great. -The Night Ministry is a non-denominational organization the serves people who have "fallen through the cracks" of our social service system: homeless and runaway youth. uninsured individuals, working poor, unsupervised children, and others. Volunteer needs include meal preparation for shelters and other outreach programs, various support for a Health Outreach Bus, a Night Walk to increase awareness of the environment faced by homeless and runaway youth, and a First Saturdays project suitable for groups of students. The Educational Talent Search Program at National-Louis University, funded by the US Department of Education, provides services to inner-city youth, parents, and teachers to assist those with the drive for academic success to meet the challenges and demands that will lead to college entry and completion. Among other activities, volunteers are needed to tutor students aged 11-13 and work with teachers at their affiliated middle school, Orozco Elementary School, located on Chicago's south side. If you are bilingual, that is a plus, but it is not required. Volunteers must provide their own transportation. The House of Welcome is an adult day program in Northfield for persons with memory loss. Volunteers with a rich diversity of talents are needed to help with regularly scheduled activities, play the piano or other instrument either for listening or sing-alongs, bring pets to visit, spend individual time with participants, or become involved in other ways of particular interest to the volunteer. An organization in Northfield which provides mental health and substance abuse support services for children, adults, and families regardless of ability to pay needs help with their Young Adult Program for persons with various physical and cognitive challenges. Volunteer opportunities include planning, socialization, independent living skills, help getting in and out of the van. Long and short term opportunities are available. The group typically meets Tuesday nights from 6-9 PM in Glencoe although there are occasional trips to restaurants, bowling, or movies. V167

An organization which promotes healthy choices among New Trier Township youth is seeking both parents and students to sit on their Council or help with various subcommittees. Volunteers are needed with strong organizational skills, creativity, an outgoing personality, and a willingness to be involved in the community. Marketing experience is a plus. V164

A continuing care residential community in Northbrook needs volunteeers to help enhance the quality of life for its residents by doing simple activities such as sing-along, listening to music, ball toss, read aloud, looking at pictures, or just simple conversation. An organization that provides various health and sexuality related support services for adolescents needs Commnity Education Presenters to speak in area school classrooms on a variety of relevant subjects. Training and presentation materials are provided. The usual commitment in 3 hours per week.V154

An Educational Surrogate Parent serves children with disabilities who need a parent advocate to be their voice for educational issues. Training sessions are currently scheduled in various locations in Chicago and suburbs during December. If you are involved with an organization which serves children with disabilities, training can also be scheduled at your facility. V153
