Martin Luther King, Jr.Day

January 21, 2008

Sponsored by Harris Bank N. A.

Hosted by Interfaith Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs
and
The Volunteer Center of New Trier Township

The morning's activities consisted of a 9am to 11am Service Project (families, groups, and individuals of all ages welcomed to make no-sew blankets for Project Linus, (which supports hospitalized children) and scarves for The Night Ministry (an agency that helps the homeless).

This was followed by an 11am to 12 pm performance (appropriate for ages 12 & up) by the Writers’ Theatre which presented “THE MLK PROJECT: THE FIGHT FOR CIVIL RIGHTS”, a play by Yolanda Androzzo that is directed by Ron O.J. Parson, about a young girl’s search for her identity as she explores the Civil Rights movement.

Participants also were encouraged to check out the new plaque that has recently been installed on the Village Green across from the Woman's Club, that commemorates Dr. King's speech in Winnetka in 1965. The plaque was made possible by students from Washburne who gained village approval then raised funds after they attended a lecture about Dr. Martin Luther King sponsored by Interfaith Housing and the Winnetka Historical Society one year ago.

Over 200 people from all five villages in New Trier Township met at the Winnetka Woman's Club to make over 300 blankets and 50 scarves for Project Linus (which supports hospitalized children) and The Night Ministry (which helps the homeless). This was over twice the number made last year!

We are grateful to Harris Bank for its sponsorship of this inspirational day of service.

Many thanks to all who participated!

Thanks also to Margot Peters and Jeni Spinney, VCNTT co-chairs for this event.
