| Become a Hospice Volunteer in Your Community | Join us for a brief introduction to the programs and volunteer opportunities at Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter, a nonprofit, community-based healthcare organization. Volunteer orientation is conducted on the fourth Tuesday of every month at our Glenview campus, 2050 Claire Court, Glenview, IL 60025. The 90-minute session includes brief overviews of CareCenter programs and services, hospice and palliative care and our volunteer opportunities. Our volunteer opportunities include: visiting with hospice patients, assembling materials and mailings, baking for special events, helping out at bereavement groups and events for children and teens, greeting visitors at our reception desk, and providing general office support. |

| Compassion + Technology = Mentoring a South African Child online! | Becoming a mentor through Infinite Family requires less than you might think. With little more than your own computer, a webcam and one half hour a week, you can be on your way to being a positive light in the life of a South African child growing up alone. Mentors must be at least 21 years of age and approved through an application process. In order to support video chat capabilities, mentors must have a high-speed internet connection and a webcam. Mentors will undergo a short online training program aimed at helping them understand the technology, the culture and the children. | English Tutor | Interfaith Refugee & Immigration Ministries is seeking English Tutors for the benefit of our refugee and immigrant clients. While many are pre-literate, others simply need help improving reading and writing skills. We are looking for individuals who offer compassion and commitment and who seek to learn new life lessons of their own. We encourage sessions that are creative, relative, and fun. A commitment of two tutoring hours per week over the course of a three-month time frame is requested. Session schedules are arranged between Tutor and Tutee, and can take place at your local library, park, coffee shop, etc. Tutors are equipped with an English Language Training workshop provided by Literacy Works. | Fitness Friend | Children's Home + Aid protects, educates and counsels children and youth to improve their lives. The agency provides services to nearly 400 foster children in the Chicago area. These children are experiencing overwhelming obstacles such as mental illness, homelessness, abuse and neglect. They have seen the ravages of poverty and drugs, and many suffer the painful loneliness caused by separation from their families. These obstacles are especially difficult, as many of them have the absence of a caring adult. The agency is greatly in need of "fitness friends" to lead youth in fitness activities such as dance, sports or yoga. |
| Foster Friend | A foster friend is a caring and committed older individual in a young person's life. By spending a few hours a week sharing activities, listening, encouraging, challenging, and building skills and self-reliance, volunteer mentors can help children achieve success. Research conducted by Private/Public Ventures based on the Big Brothers Big Sisters model (P/PV, 2000) found that youth who are successfully matched with an adult are 52 percent less likely to skip school, earn slightly higher grades, and feel better about how they are doing in school. Mentoring has proved to be a powerful tool for helping young people fulfill their potential. Children's Home + Aid protects, educates and counsels children and youth to improve their lives. The agency provides services to nearly 50 children in residential treatment in Evanston. These children are experiencing overwhelming obstacles such as mental illness, homelessness, abuse and neglect. These obstacles are especially difficult, as many of them have the absence of a caring adult. The agency is greatly in need of "foster friends" to serve as positive role models for our youth in the foster care system and residential treatment center. |

| Tutor | Wonderful oppourtunity to make a real difference in the lives of school-age children. The ABC Polk Brothers Youth Center (part of the Chicago Youth Centers organization) needs volunteers to tutor students, helping out with their homework, at their after-school program. The ages of the children range from kindergarten through high school. Tutoring for college entrance exams also will be offered. We would like a weekly commitment from our volunteers to provide consistency to the children. Any training or assistance, if requested, will be provided to the tutors. This tutoring program is organized by the Northern Board of Chicago Youth Centers, based in the north suburbs, and members of the Northern Board usually will be tutoring on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, along with other volunteer tutors. Our members can help arrange transportation for other volunteers from the north suburbs. |
