Make a Difference Day 2009 Report

RAIN & COLD DON’T DAMPEN RESULTS!

Eleven grateful organizations were the recipients of the generous donors during the Volunteer Center’s October 24th Make A Difference Day.  The 7th annual one-day collection drive pulled together thousands of residents and service groups in the New Trier Township. Highcrest Middle School in Wilmette and Crow Island Elementary School in Winnetka involved their entire student bodies in collecting goods. Other groups included a Wilmette Youth Hockey team, St. Francis Xavier, New Trier High School, Sacred Heart and many Scouts and families.  Domino's Pizza in Wilmette and Glencoe, and Irving's Red Hots in Wilmette generously helped promote this year's drive.

Co-chairs Pat Pappageorge and Kendra Olvany were pleased with the day’s results.  A new organization was added this year, Share Your Soles, that received over 1,000 pair of shoes to be restored and delivered around the globe!  Other collectyions included:

    • 6 van loads of paper goods for the NTT Pantry
    • 1 van full of baby formula for INFANT, Inc.
    • 1 van full of baby diapers for Infant Welfare Society
    • 60 pair of eyeglasses for Hadley School for the Blind
    • 80 prom dresses for Dreams Delivered (Woman’s Club of Evanston)
    • 7 pallets of food for Greater Chicago Food Depository
    • 22 bikes were donated to Working Bikes
    • 1 van load of clothing and 1 van full of sports gear went
to a Lakota Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
